village rooftops

Village Rooftops

exploring the nooks and crannies of tobago, brought me to the small fishing village of parlatuvier on the west side of the island. here are relics from a time gone by: a couple of stilt homes – one of them obviously abandoned; the other is anyone’s guess…

still standing

VA5239

on the northeastern tip of tobago lies the village of charlotteville. upon my approach into the village, i noticed this charming old wood house nestled among the trees and vegetation off the main road into town. though i believed it to be abandoned, it was not, as i heard voices coming from within. it’s amazing how many of these old wooden homes are still standing throughout the sister islands of trinidad and tobago. some seemingly on their last legs, as it were; most abandoned and decaying…

sunrise over the islands

Sunrise Over The Islands

a long awaited trip to tobago took me to the north end of the island, at speyside, for lodging at the beautiful blue waters inn. situated in a cove, the resort faces both goat island and little tobago island (aka bird of paradise island).

here are the islands and a coconut tree silhouetted in the early morning as the sun made its appearance.

as concerns little tobago, the story goes that one sir william ingram introduced the greater bird of paradise to the island in 1909, for preservation of the species due to overhunting in its native new guinea. after his death, his heirs deeded the island to the government of trinidad and tobago as a wildlife sanctuary. the species survived until hurricane flora hit the island in 1963.

another tidbit: rumours persist that ian fleming (of james bond fame) owned the home visible on goat island. andrew lycett, his biographer disagrees, stating: “as far as we are aware, there is no link between ian fleming and goat island. the james bond novels were all written at fleming’s house, goldeneye, in jamaica.

schoolhouse below

Schoolhouse Below

driving the california coast from san diego to san francisco, i hit the craziest rainstorm i think i have ever witnessed. i stopped off for the night at a motel somewhere before san simeon because there was no sense continuing in the pounding rain. the next morning it was still rather grey and wet but managed to get a tour of the hearst castle.

the tour over, the weather changed for the better and i shot this oft-photographed old schoolhouse in old san simeon. the schoolhouse was originally built for the children of employees of  william randolph hearst.

i drive by this property virtually every day – it catches my eye every time. i can’t explain the appeal but i finally had a chance to photograph it when i was driving by at an off-peak traffic hour…

fly to the sun

b047-36rev

driving along highway 5 from san diego to los angeles, i had the opportunity to veer off onto highway 1 and make a pit stop in newport beach for dinner. made my way to one of the beaches as the sun was setting – a nice end to a wonderful day in a beautiful part of the world!
