on hiatus

good evening folks!

i am preparing for a really cool self-guided photo trip that will have me visiting the province of newfoundland on the east coast of canada! it is a dream-come-true, as i have never visited there before… the pics and video i have seen have always left me in awe of the rugged beauty of the easternmost locales of north america.

i will be visiting such places as st. john’s (including signal hill and cape spear), gros morne national park, st. anthony (icebergs!), l’anse-aux-meadows, corner brook, rose blanche and more…

that means i will not be posting any pics for a while. i will be in toronto to bookend the trip – in all i will be away for about a month or so.

so with that i wish you all a great first half of the summer and we’ll catch you all on the other side!

best,

sunburst over the three sisters

‘s Sunburst Over The Three Sisters

coastal erosion in southwestern trinidad, at columbus bay, has been occurring for centuries and indeed continues to take its toll at the present time. the captivating stacks there today, commonly referred to as the three sisters, are what is left of the once prominent ancient headlands of this area.

photographed after a dip in the warm waters in late march, here are the three sisters under a wonderful sunburst through the clouds.

crazy arch

Crazy Arch

visible from the plains between billings and bozeman are the crazy mountains of montana. this scene, with the mountains visible beyond the arch, was photographed around big timber, montana just off the i-90 heading westward.

though there is not a definite origin to the name, the most popular story goes that a woman travelling across the plains by wagon went insane. she left her party and was later found near those mountains. hence, the mountains were originally named crazy woman mountains. the name was eventually shortened to crazy mountains.

storm over ‘old faithful’

Storm Over 'Old Faithful'

returning to vancouver from toronto, i opted to drive the whole way back through the northern united states. i spent a day touring yellowstone national park, home of the world-famous old faithful geyser – aptly named so because it erupts at relatively steady intervals.

it had been a splendid early fall day in october as i awaited the next eruption… the sun was progressively disappearing as a storm started to push through. dejected that the weather was changing for my one and only opportunity to photograph this wonder, i half-heartedly started shooting when old faithful finally blew its steam. when it had finished, i returned to the car and kept on my way through the rest of the road back to the campsite.

it would be a couple of weeks before i got my slides back – imagine my surprise when i witnessed the scene as it had been captured – i fell in love with this shot!

cabin on the pond

Cabin On The Pond

exploring the area just north of yellowstone national park, i ended up on some gravel roads in the back-country hills. this scene came up as i made my way up to what would be a surreal experience… further on up i came into this strange hamlet with a few old shacks and trucks. there was an eerie silence as the sun was going down – most memorable was the rather large man sitting on his stoop, staring at me as i drove by… i was definitely far away from home!

the sun was going down in the west as i captured this. what you are seeing is the sun’s natural colour reflecting off the trees on this sepia-toned image.
