well weathered
oh, the stories this well weathered fishing shack could tell: long, tough winters of snow and ice; beautiful summer days with glorious sunsets; storms of all kinds; in short, life on the rock… located in green point, nl, this scene was photographed in the late afternoon as a rain storm was pushing towards me – it was rather blustery indeed on this early july day!

clouds over the trail 1, 2 & 3
driving back to my home base of rocky harbour, nl, the clouds and scenes were too tempting to pass up on this beautiful afternoon. tripod setup right in the middle of the road, i did have to get out of the way once or twice, otherwise it was me in this wondrous landscape, all alone… 😉

viking trail at the pond
the viking trail (highway 431 on newfoundland’s west coast) with the steep rock walls of western brook pond visible from a distance under a gorgeous sky.

grounded
i happened into this little fishing village when i found the gate open at the top of the hill off the viking trail not too far from western brook pond – it seemed deserted on this day. this is the first photograph i took before i started looking for someone, anyone, in the village. after a cursory glance around and knocking on a few doors (to no avail) i did meet one thomas gilley who arrived after me. he gave me a brief history of the village and its name: gull marsh. after chatting for a bit, he gave me permission to photograph at my leisure… thanks thomas, if you ever stumble upon my work (i did leave him a business card), i hope you see this shot. 😉

at road’s end
main street south in rocky harbour deadend’s at the coast. this morning happened to be rather drizzly and unsettled, but a spectacular view was to be had once the clouds and fog started to break up and shift around. thankfully i was there to capture it… 😉

from the brink
originally named the lord nelson orange lodge, this building served as a social hall for the community of woody point hosting dances, meetings, weddings, and other social events starting in 1908. it eventually fell into disrepair and was abandoned for many years. in the late 1990’s the building got a new lease on life as it were, when a local musician and his wife purchased the property, restored it and renamed it the woody point heritage theatre. in 2012, it went up for sale and was purchased by the friends of writers at woody point, a group that holds an annual festival of words and music. today, not only does it host the festival, but it still serves as a community hall, the way it has since its inception in 1908.

beyond the boulder
the woody point lighthouse in its surroundings on the western shore of the south arm of bonne bay. though a lighthouse was initially erected in 1919, the one that stands today was built in 1959 and used a battery-operated light instead of the previous kerosene (1919 -1923) and acetylene (1923-1959) ones.

shack off the freeway
driving in western new york en-route to nyc, this shack off the freeway caught my eye… i pulled over and set up my camera/tripod to take the shot. as I was putting my gear away, a police car pulled up behind me with lights flashing etc… i was told that what i had done was illegal and never to do it again – off with a warning, as it were… anyway, glad i got the shot!

wicker chair
a wicker chair ‘planter’ on the grounds of st. anne’s spa in grafton, ontario.
a lazy day trip out, east of toronto, took me to this historic site. the setting is quiet, peaceful and serene… the grounds are on a plateau overlooking the gentle rolling hills of northumberland county. made of stone, the main building dates back to the mid-1800’s.
