in the field

In The Field

driving on the side roads of southwestern ontario in and around the cities and towns of london, woodstock, thamesford and ingersoll, i ended up on a dirt road around the community of beachville.

now, i am a sucker for lone trees out in a field somewhere and i will always stop and setup the gear when i stumble upon one. this particular tree may not be what i visualize in my mind’s eye, but beggars cannot be choosers, as it were… add the wonderful clouds and it was too hard to pass up! there you have it, tree in field 😉

trivia: the town of beachville happens to be the site of the first ever recorded baseball game played in north america – in 1838! it happened one year before the first game at cooperstown, new york. you can read more about it here.

above the horseshoe

Above The Horseshoe

early morning at sunup with scarcely a soul around… here is the magnificent horseshoe falls on the canadian side of niagara falls with the now-defunct toronto power generating station in the background.

Both Sides

niagara falls with a wider angle of view than the previous release. this one includes the canadian skyline, the american falls and a segment of the canadian horseshoe falls at the rear of the composition – all, once again, from the observation tower in niagara falls state park.

from the tower

From The Tower

after my twelve day jaunt in newfoundland, i spent about a week or so with my son kicking around southern ontario. our first stop was niagara falls – one of my favourite parts of the province because it is so beautifully scenic during all seasons. here we have the american falls in the foreground and a part of the canadian horseshoe falls at the back right of the photograph, captured with  long exposure from the observation tower at niagara falls state park in western new york.

morning reflection

Morning Reflection

while i was waiting for the fog to sort itself out on this morning, i was greeted by this scene at the entrance to new harbour, newfoundland.

from the old dock

From The Old Dock

this is the scene that greeted me at green’s harbour – a fishing village on the south shore of trinity bay in newfoundland – on that crazy, foggy morning when i was trying to capture shag rock in whiteway.

i debated about releasing this image as is… i composed the scene with the end of the dock showing in a way that it would not interrupt the reflection of the vessels. in my minds eye, i would just edit it out… but the more i looked at it, the less i wanted to remove the dock.

thoughts?

as the fog clears

As The Fog Clears

peter b., a fella who worked for newfoundland tourism, suggested i try to head to the little town of whiteway on the shores of trinity bay on my way to st. john’s. he fired up his pc and showed me a picture of shag rock. one look and i was hooked. so what was supposed to be a leisurely drive towards st. john’s ended up being a bit of a marathon as it extended my trip on this day by a few hours.

alas, after i had checked in to my motel room and made my way to whiteway, the weather was not co-operating… everything was fogging over! ditto the next morning. i literally got up before the crack of dawn and made my way over to whiteway again. it was drizzling. when i arrived, everything was fogged over once again. 5 hours into my little excursion and i finally got this shot off – perseverance pays off! wouldn’t you know it? it fogged over some more afterwards…

in any event, there you have it – my take on shag rock in the waters of whiteway bay, newfoundand 😉

trees along the highway 1 & 2

Trees Along The Highway 1

Trees Along The Highway 2

i was leaving the west coast of newfoundland on an overcast morning and by the time i reached the exit for the town of howley along the tch, just past deer lake, both sides of the highway were forested. there were clumps of what i presume to be birch trees for a stretch. i am always fascinated when the white bark stands out against the other forest trees and thought i would photograph a stand…
