the club

The Club

this historic building in the heart of the downtown core of st. catharines at 77 ontario street has housed the st. catharines club since 1927. An example of georgian design, the structure itself dates back to 1874 when it was known as the haynes residence, presumably the home of a prominent family of the era.

thecluba 24″ x 24″ canvas print of ‘the club’ hangs on one of the dining room walls at the st. catharines club.

today, the stately rodman hall is as an art centre under the care of brock university in st. catharines, ontario. the building itself originates from the mid-1850’s where it was the private residence of one thomas rodman merritt, a businessman and politician in his day. an archway indicates that the estate was completed in 1863. the estate was under the merritt family’s control until 1960 when the city of st. catharines and the district arts council purchased the property at that time and converted it into and arts centre. brock university took over the property in 2003 with the understanding that it would continue as an arts centre.

here it is, photographed on a beautiful summer night with a full moon aglow.

nicely lit as dusk was settling in, this is the art deco-styled buffalo city hall building. after scoping out the area around, i setlled on this vantage point to photograph it. it is a 32-story building and measures approximately 378 feet from street level to the tiptop of the tower. not only is it one of the tallest buildings in western new york, but it is also one of the tallest municipal buildings in the usa.
