deep and narrow

most of the write-ups on the robert h. treman state park refer to enfield glen as the deep and narrow gorge to be found there…

we spent most of the afternoon at taughannock falls state park and still had a couple of hours of daylight left when we decided to visit lucifer falls, the 115 waterfall showpiece of this state park. we had no expectations as we did not know what to expect… a feast for the eyes is appropriate.

having parked in the upper parking lot, we made our way along the trails that led to the aforementioned gorge. just as you enter the gorge, you are greeted by this magnificent sight of enfield creek and the tall rock walls that lead to lucifer falls a few minutes downstream.

prelude to the upper falls

from the overlook view point area at taughannock falls state park, the trails carry on to give different views yet of taughannock falls. the views, depending on the season, will be obstructed by varying degrees.

further on still along the trails you can reach the black diamond trail that will give views of the upper falls. unfortunately, the guard rails are extremely high and composing a shot of the upper falls is difficult.

this shot is just to the right of the upper falls with a partial view of the jacksonville road bridge over the taughannock creek.

a view from the tower

last stop of the day before we continued on to montreal and the weather was still rather dicey; but i decided to pay the fee and go up the 1000 islands tower. once up there, a 360 degree panorama of the region awaits you. this vantage point gives you the canadian side along with the 1000 islands international bridge to the usa. unfortunately, it was too early to have any meaningful colour change in the trees below. another month or so would have given spectacular results, i reckon… lovely clouds though 😉

the great house and bridge

VB8007

lopinot is a small village in trinidad named after compte josef charles de lopinot de la fresilliere. he acquired acreage on this site and settled the lopinot valley around 1806 and was a significant contributor to cocoa production in trinidad. what remains on the site today is his great plantation house (photographed) and two cocoa drying sheds. the great house has been converted into a museum. the rest of the complex is a lovely landscaped park with walking trails and access to a nearby stream.

legend has it that on rainy and stormy nights his ghost will make an appearance, as documented on ghost hunters international (episode: rising from the grave). 😉

on a side note, i attempted to photograph at this location on more than one occasion but just could not get it right. thankfully, i finally got it the way i wanted on my last attempt before leaving trinidad!
