from the border

minutes to the east of rosh hanikra, still in the western galilee, is kibbutz hanita with its northern limits being the lebanese border. it was established back in 1938 as a tower and stockade settlement. these types of settlements were relatively common during this era of jewish settlements in palestine, before israel was a state. they refer to the first two structures built by pioneers to defend the land they were dwelling in.

presumably, its early industry was agriculture; the kibbutz still produces bananas, citrus fruits and field crops but it derives the bulk of its revenues from two on-site factories: hanita lenses and hanita coatings, the latter of which was recently purchased by the avery-dennison conglomerate.

as an aside, i have a connection to this place as my aunt and cousin live there. the image you are seeing is from an observation tower that gives a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. photographed here is the setting sun in the western skies with the mediterranean sea in the distance. the prominent road you see in the frame is off limits and is used exclusively by the military.

northern coastline

the available light at sundown once again provides for a longer exposure of the coastline as seen from rosh hanikra. as one heads south along the number 4 road, there are two small cities, nahariya and acre (akko), as well as a couple of villages before reaching haifa, israel’s third largest city after jerusalem and tel aviv. the extension of city lights that you see jutting to the right towards the centre of the frame are indeed those of the haifa metropolitan area.

the fishermen

the attraction at rosh hanikra visited and photographed, we took the cable car back up to where we came from. the beauty of this place never ends. the views to the west for a sunset or indeed south towards metropolitan haifa are gorgeous! with the sun below the horizon already, here is a shot of a small segment of the coastline directly to the south of rosh hanikra. the available light allows for a long exposure to highlight the seafoam cause by breaking waves from the mediterranean sea. the two fellows don’t seem to be bothered one bit…

obscured by fog

Obscured By Fogfurther down the coast on the cabrillo highway (highway 1), around hurricane point. typically, from this vantage point one would see the point sur lighthouse atop a big chunk of volcanic rock. this morning, however, the fog kept rolling in off the pacific ocean and that view is simply obscured…

the fog beyond

The Fog Beyond

having completed the 17-mile drive, at the crack of dawn, back in pebble beach, i continued back down the cabrillo highway (highway 1) towards los angeles. here is a shot of the fog rolling in further down the coastline, beyond the bixby bridge in big sur.

gamboa point view

Gamboa Point View

having left twenty-nine palms and joshua tree national park earlier in the day, i made my way to the coast. i have been here a few times and it remains one of my favourite places to visit and photograph! here we have a section of the coast on my approach to the big creek bridge from gamboa point with a deserted china basin beach on the right of the frame.
