remains of the harbour

so, after rejoining my aunt, cousin and wife for dinner, the light just would not give up! i excused myself once again to get a shot of the ancient harbour wall, sometimes referred to as the pisan harbour.

light in the port

having stopped for a bite to eat, courtesy of my aunt, at abu christo: one of the many restaurants in the old city, i noticed that the light was turning downright gorgeous… i excused myself and let the ladies order the food while i went to find something to photograph, as it were.

i had wanted to get a cityscape of acre, so that was the direction i went. i was not disappointed. i somehow made my way onto a terrace after climbing short walls and landed on a terrace adjacent to the akko light, the still-in-use lighthouse belonging to the old city. beyond it was the skyline with that glorious light i mentioned…

both ways through

still on route 3199 with trailing lights from vehicles passing at dusk. the lights below the mountain plateau are from the desert resort of kfar hanokdim, where one can experience a taste of the bedouin lifestyle.

from the border

minutes to the east of rosh hanikra, still in the western galilee, is kibbutz hanita with its northern limits being the lebanese border. it was established back in 1938 as a tower and stockade settlement. these types of settlements were relatively common during this era of jewish settlements in palestine, before israel was a state. they refer to the first two structures built by pioneers to defend the land they were dwelling in.

presumably, its early industry was agriculture; the kibbutz still produces bananas, citrus fruits and field crops but it derives the bulk of its revenues from two on-site factories: hanita lenses and hanita coatings, the latter of which was recently purchased by the avery-dennison conglomerate.

as an aside, i have a connection to this place as my aunt and cousin live there. the image you are seeing is from an observation tower that gives a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. photographed here is the setting sun in the western skies with the mediterranean sea in the distance. the prominent road you see in the frame is off limits and is used exclusively by the military.

northern coastline

the available light at sundown once again provides for a longer exposure of the coastline as seen from rosh hanikra. as one heads south along the number 4 road, there are two small cities, nahariya and acre (akko), as well as a couple of villages before reaching haifa, israel’s third largest city after jerusalem and tel aviv. the extension of city lights that you see jutting to the right towards the centre of the frame are indeed those of the haifa metropolitan area.

from the old port

a couple of things at play here… the obvious one is the tel aviv skyline. i was still on the seawall and walked right to its north end where the unobscured cityscape awaited. waves were crashing all about and i did get a tad wet, though the equipment did not. i do believe the sun had already set into the horizon behind me.  dusk was indeed setting in but the light was still lovely and a few clouds hung about while the city lights were starting to become more prominent in the early evening sky.

less obvious is andromeda’s rock. you will notice a cluster of rocks in the foreground; the one with the israeli flag is the rock in question. it is not particularly large or even prominent, but greek mythology has it that the goddess andromeda was chained to that rock as a sacrificial victim, ultimately saved from certain death by perseus.

the old port city

after a failed attempt at visiting the carmel market in tel aviv (it was a holiday in israel and the traffic was off the charts insane), we opted to get another day in jaffa instead. as the late afternoon and early evening were coming on, it was becoming evident that the light was looking lovely. i had scoped out a few vantage points from which to get a skyline shot from and finally decided that taking it from the seawall across from the old city would be best. it would require some climbing and a little access to unauthorized areas, but this was indeed the best vantage point! besides, young men were fishing there virtually all day and i accessed the same places they did to reach my spot.

here then, you have the old port city of jaffa’s cityscape in all it’s splendour while being bathed in setting sunlight from a mostly cloudless sky behind me in the open mediterranean sea.

city hall lights (colour and b&w)

nicely lit as dusk was settling in, this is the art deco-styled buffalo city hall building. after scoping out the area around, i setlled on this vantage point to photograph it. it is a 32-story building and measures approximately 378 feet from street level to the tiptop of the tower. not only is it one of the tallest buildings in western new york, but it is also one of the tallest municipal buildings in the usa.

parkway lights (colour and b&w)

the niagara parkway with building lights glowing at dusk. i was crossing the street and looked to my left on the median as i saw cars travelling on either side of me. thought it would make an interesting shot and voila!
