horse lake autumn

after finishing with little cove provincial park, we went back to our motel and had some breakfast. in the late morning, we made our way to the bruce peninsula national park, again just outside of tobermory, ontario.

the entrance fee paid and the car parked, we made our way to the georgian bay trail that would eventually join the bruce trail to take us to the famous grotto – the main event, if you will, of this wonderful park. the weather, though it had cleared up for a time, became unsettled again; and we would deal with ‘the weather’ for the rest of the day.

walking the trail took us along the border of horse lake for a time. a little opening in the bushes and forest revealed this scene: a little fall splendour with wonderful clouds that this kind of weather can bring…

cascade’s approach (colour and b&w)

Cascade's Approach

Cascade's Approach (B&W)

the cavern cascade is one of the more prominent features along glen creek and the gorge trail in watkins glen state park. here we are a little further along the trail, from the main entrance, approaching it. though not yet entirely visible, you can make the cascade out just to the right of the steps at the rear of the frame.

autumn falls 1 & 2

VC1604

VC1594

invariably as one drives along the queen elizabeth way (qew) towards niagara falls in southern ontario, road signs indicating ball’s falls conservation area can be seen. now living in st. catharines, i finally had a chance to visit the area… the twenty mile creek flows through and plummets over both the upper falls and the lower falls – the latter photographed here from two vantage points across the creek from each other in all its autumn splendour.

ball’s falls, it turns out, is actually a hamlet “… lovingly maintained to its early mid 19th century industrial … atmosphere featuring the original ball family home, an operating flour mill, a lime kiln, a church, black smith shop, carriage shed and more.” – niagara peninsula conservation authority

autumn at morningstar

Autumn At Morningstar

morningstar mill in all it’s fall colour splendour! the right-hand building is the grist mill that still produces flour during the summer and early fall months. the red structure on the left represents the sawmill that was once operating on the site. both reflected  on a small pond that is fed by lake gibson, a man-made reservoir that provides water to the city of st. catharines. the water eventually tumbles at decew falls, just beyond the buildings.
