beyond the cove

Beyond The Cove

continuing along the one-way conzelman road, after having left hawk hill in the marin headlands, i stopped at battery rathbone mcindoe to look at the old powder and shell room structures and to take in the wonderful views the site has to offer.

here, you have part of bonita cove in the foreground with the south tower of the golden gate bridge and san francisco beyond…

incidentally, construction of the battery started in 1904 and completed in 1905 – it was initially named after lt. samuel b. rathbone, a u.s. artillerist, who died of wounds received in action at queenstown heights, upper canada, in 1812. in 1922, the east half of the battery was renamed for brig. gen james f. mcindoe, an engineer officer who was serving in france and died there in 1919. the battery was deactivated in 1948.

golden gate bridge

VB9293

photographed from one of the lookouts in the marin headlands, this is the world famous, and probably one of the world’s most iconic landmarks: the golden gate bridge. it connects san francisco to the headlands over the golden gate strait. here it is on a sunny may afternoon, once the clouds and fog from earlier in the day had dissipated.

just about

VB9172

after spending some time at lands end on the western tip of san francisco, i ventured out towards the golden gate bridge following a section of the beautiful 49 mile scenic drive.

as was the case the last time i had been in san francisco, it was cloudy and overcast. i found the approximate spot i was at when ‘a february scene” was photographed from baker beach and took another shot; this time the tops of the two bridge towers still enveloped in low clouds and fog of this late morning.
