sunrise from the citadel

after arriving at masada while it was still dark, we made the climb up the ‘snake path’ to the top of the plateau.  it is by no means an easy or short hike, but it is doable with a couple of bottles of water at hand. you will sweat –  a lot! i could not imagine doing the climb later in the day; the weather is just too hot…

it is tradition to climb masada to observe the sunrise. admittedly, i was not sure if there would be a sunrise to photograph as the dust that seemed to hang in the air during our entire stay in the south of israel was present again on this day. i had wanted to photograph the jordanian mountains while in eilat and could not. you can just barely make them out here, as viewed from the summit. the water you see in the middle of the frame is the dead sea.

lighthouse morning

Lighthouse Morninghaving returned to canada and chosen st. catharines as our new hometown, it was time to start exploring a little… here is the marina pier at sunrise, in port dalhousie, a community within the city of st. catharines. the lighthouse in the distance (extreme left of the frame) is located at the end of the harbour walkway trail and is known as the outer range lighthouse while the closer one is referred to as the inner lighthouse.

obscured by fog

Obscured By Fogfurther down the coast on the cabrillo highway (highway 1), around hurricane point. typically, from this vantage point one would see the point sur lighthouse atop a big chunk of volcanic rock. this morning, however, the fog kept rolling in off the pacific ocean and that view is simply obscured…

the fog beyond

The Fog Beyond

having completed the 17-mile drive, at the crack of dawn, back in pebble beach, i continued back down the cabrillo highway (highway 1) towards los angeles. here is a shot of the fog rolling in further down the coastline, beyond the bixby bridge in big sur.

the lone cypress 4

The Lone Cypress 4

surely battered by wind and waves; exposed to the elements from its granite pedestal and secured by half-hidden cables, this is the iconic lone cypress of pebble beach in the monterey peninsula of central california.

a rainy and foggy morning for my return trip to los angeles, i took the 17-mile drive, while it was still dark, to start the day. i arrived at the lone cypress during a foggy, but thankfully, dry dawn and stood by the magnificent tree perched on the coastline.

this is the last in a series of four (4) photographs of this oft-photographed iconic landmark.
