canyon trail 1
timna park and its wonderful rock formations behind me, the next adventure would come by way of the red canyon in the eilat mountains. also north of the city of eilat, it is situated off of route 12 – the road along the egyptian border in southern israel. deriving its name from the red sandstone prominent in this part of the world, it is a splendid hike along a trail that eventually descends into the canyon by way of ladders and metal rungs secured to rock walls. once through the canyon one exits onto the shani riverbed (which is usually dry unless there is heavy rain or flooding in the area) and a climb back up to the starting point ensues.
a special thank you to my cousin’s partner ouri s. for being our guide that afternoon!
