morning reflection
while i was waiting for the fog to sort itself out on this morning, i was greeted by this scene at the entrance to new harbour, newfoundland.

from the old dock
this is the scene that greeted me at green’s harbour – a fishing village on the south shore of trinity bay in newfoundland – on that crazy, foggy morning when i was trying to capture shag rock in whiteway.
i debated about releasing this image as is… i composed the scene with the end of the dock showing in a way that it would not interrupt the reflection of the vessels. in my minds eye, i would just edit it out… but the more i looked at it, the less i wanted to remove the dock.
thoughts?

as the fog clears
peter b., a fella who worked for newfoundland tourism, suggested i try to head to the little town of whiteway on the shores of trinity bay on my way to st. john’s. he fired up his pc and showed me a picture of shag rock. one look and i was hooked. so what was supposed to be a leisurely drive towards st. john’s ended up being a bit of a marathon as it extended my trip on this day by a few hours.
alas, after i had checked in to my motel room and made my way to whiteway, the weather was not co-operating… everything was fogging over! ditto the next morning. i literally got up before the crack of dawn and made my way over to whiteway again. it was drizzling. when i arrived, everything was fogged over once again. 5 hours into my little excursion and i finally got this shot off – perseverance pays off! wouldn’t you know it? it fogged over some more afterwards…
in any event, there you have it – my take on shag rock in the waters of whiteway bay, newfoundand 😉

trees along the highway 1 & 2
i was leaving the west coast of newfoundland on an overcast morning and by the time i reached the exit for the town of howley along the tch, just past deer lake, both sides of the highway were forested. there were clumps of what i presume to be birch trees for a stretch. i am always fascinated when the white bark stands out against the other forest trees and thought i would photograph a stand…

waiting for clouds
waiting for clouds indeed… having found this site almost by accident in the morning, i returned in the late afternoon, but the sun was still giving off some fairly harsh light. i spent some time hiking the area until clouds started to move in. each time clouds obscured the sun a photo op was made available. after a few tries (and a couple of hours passed), i got this shot of steady brook falls. 😉

island cove from above
upon arriving in corner brook, newfoundland i checked into the tourist office and was advised that given the short stay i had planned, a must-do would be the south shore drive. it is a lovely 45 minute ride along the winding route 450, all the way to the coast and ends basically at the town of lark harbour. from there i took little port road as far as it would go. i arrived at this canyon overlooking island cove as dusk was approaching…

from lockers point
robin g., the friend i met in st. anthony, took me through the town of roddickton-bide arm after we left main brook; we then proceeded further south to englee, newfoundland, where we were greeted by this beautiful glacier…

at rest on salmon bay
while visiting the town of st. anthony in the great northern peninsula of newfoundland, i met a new friend, robin g., who was heading home. he offered to show me around the area he lived in before i continued on to corner brook further south. we first made our way through the tiny village of main brook. this was photographed from water st., looking out towards devarenne (bushy) island on salmon bay.

the arches
arches provincial park, located between parsons pond and portland creek on newfoundland’s west coast, features ‘the arches’ as a centrepiece: a three-arch (previously four-arch) rock formation naturally formed by tidal action. only two arches are visible from this vantage point.
