lakeshore sunset 1
a sunset on the shores of lake ontario at the town of lincoln in the niagara region of southern ontario. close to home, i have taken a renewed interest in sunsets and sunrises and this spot is as good as any! i will continue coming back here, as it is close to home, to see what mother nature can offer as the months and seasons change.

parkway winter
a late winter snowfall prompted me to drive and seek some winter scenery. i was not disappointed while exploring the niagara-on-the-lake portion of the niagara parkway: a stand of snow-covered trees beyond a vineyard.

clouds over the point
upon first moving to the niagara peninsula, i was flipping through a tour guide and saw a picture of the point abino lighthouse. intrigued by such a lovely structure, i sought to visit it for a chance to photograph it. to my dismay i could not!
it would seem the monument has a contentious existence that remains very much alive today: the lighthouse sits perched on a narrow spit of land on the north shore of lake erie, a few kilometres west of fort erie, ontario. in 1915, construction finaly began after an agreement with local residents (mostly wealthy americans) of the community of point abino was reached. this was private land after all!
fast forward to today and though the town of fort erie has owned it since 2003, it still sits on private land and access is unfortunately quite limited. it can be visited through the summer months through a rather limited schedule – access is not granted throughout the rest of the year.
so, i finally managed to make it out there on a sunday, this past summer. the day seemed to have decent cloud cover to offer suitable lighting. alas, when i got there, by the time i had walked the mile or so to reach the site, the clouds were breaking up… this was one of the first shots i took before the clouds dissipated enough to let that harsh sunlight through.

sawmill at morningstar
many moons ago i saw a photo of this red structure (representing a sawmill) in a tourist magazine for the niagara region in southern ontario. i wanted a shot (no pun intended) at photographing it – so after consulting a tourist office, i nailed it down to this site in st. catharines called morningstar mill. i have been visiting this area for the last 10+ years or so, but never really captured it adequately…
anyway, fast forward to the summer of 2015 and my family and i decided to settle in st. catharines after looking around at smaller communities outside the gta (greater toronto area). lo and behold, this site is a mere 10 minute drive away from my home – accessible anytime! 😉

lighthouse morning
having returned to canada and chosen st. catharines as our new hometown, it was time to start exploring a little… here is the marina pier at sunrise, in port dalhousie, a community within the city of st. catharines. the lighthouse in the distance (extreme left of the frame) is located at the end of the harbour walkway trail and is known as the outer range lighthouse while the closer one is referred to as the inner lighthouse.
