sail by the island
continuing with the sights of san francisco, this is alcatraz island under an overcast sky with a sailboat in the waters of san francisco bay.
“the small island was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison (1868), and a federal prison from 1933 until 1963… today, the island’s facilities are managed by the national park service as part of the golden gate national recreation area; it is open to tours. visitors can reach the island by ferry ride from pier 33, near fisherman’s wharf, san francisco… landmarks on the island include the main cellhouse, dining hall, library, lighthouse, the ruins of the warden’s house and officers club, parade grounds, building 64, water tower, new industries building, model industries building, and the recreation yard.” ~ wikipedia

just about
after spending some time at lands end on the western tip of san francisco, i ventured out towards the golden gate bridge following a section of the beautiful 49 mile scenic drive.
as was the case the last time i had been in san francisco, it was cloudy and overcast. i found the approximate spot i was at when ‘a february scene” was photographed from baker beach and took another shot; this time the tops of the two bridge towers still enveloped in low clouds and fog of this late morning.

seal rocks
the rock formation present at the north end of ocean beach at lands end in san francisco is called seal rocks. so named for the sea lions that used to ‘haul out’ on the rock formation. apparently the sea lions have migrated to pier 39 and it is usually only birds to be found there (as this photo would indicate):
“a few california sea lions began ‘hauling out’ on pier 39′s k-dock shortly after the loma prieta earthquake hit san francisco in october 1989. by january 1990, the boisterous barking pinnipeds started to arrive in droves and completely took over k-dock, much to the exasperation of pier 39′s marina tenants. the marina staff turned to the marine mammal center, an organization devoted to the rescue and rehabilitation of marine mammals, for advice about their new slippery tenants. After much debate and research, the experts from the marine mammal center recommended that the sea lions stay in their newfound home.” ~ pier39.com
