in full bloom

In Full Bloom

the pride of trinidad and tobago! trinbagonians are in awe of these beautiful flowering trees. there are generally three varieties to be found on the twin republic islands in the caribbean: pink, yellow and white. though referred to as poui trees in t&t, they are also known as pink tecoma, pink trumpet or trumpet trees. not unlike, the north american and japanese cherry blossoms, they also flower for a very short time. however, when in full bloom they dot the landscape with a splash of colour. this one was photographed at the rock garden in the queen’s park savannah of port of spain.

along the forest road

Along The Forest Road

the road up to fort george winds through a residential neighbourhood before continuing into the forested hills high above port of spain. along this narrow, winding road, this lovely scene was captured on my way back from the fort.

clouds over the fort

Clouds Over The Fort

fort george, formerly called la vigie, sits high up in the hills overlooking port of spain and the gulf of paria in trinidad. it was one of a series of defense positions to protect the island established in 1804. never having been used for military purposes, it ceased being a military facility around 1846several cannons are from the original site and bear the british royalty coat of arms. the wooden structure you see photographed was a signal station established 1883 and was in use until 1964. today the site is a recreational area for residents and tourists alike, with picnic tables and landscaped grounds. the views afforded are spectacular and on the clearest of days, venezuela can be seen in the distance.

performing arches

VA4863

the national academy of performing arts building (napa) in port of spain. This is a tough one to photograph as the lighting is somewhat sporadic. there is always a blue/purple glow about the building. the red/orange in this instance was presumably used for the performance on the following night. There are light towers on the grounds surrounding the building, which i am sure are meant to light the exterior space but i have yet to see them turned on. according to a security guard i spoke with, they only get turned on when an event is taking place…

city from the hill

City From The Hill

another find… port of spain in all its glory at dusk from lady chancellor road. a cool drive along a narrow winding road into a pretty exclusive residential area. near the top are magnificent views of the savannah and the downtown core beyond. the road itself is frequented by walkers, joggers, and cyclists – depending on the time of day you do have to take care while driving for all the people going about their exercise routines.
