by the grand staircase: lucifer falls

as mentioned with the previous image, devil’s kitchen (the waterfall) leads to the 115′ state park showpiece called lucifer falls.  here it is photographed from a section of steps that affords a view of about half the waterfall…

falls by the steps: devil’s kitchen

there are 12 waterfalls within the robert h. treman state park; 3 of them, apparently, are named. the 115′ lucifer falls and the lower falls that give way to a swimming area are the main attractions, as it were…

This is a section of falls just before lucifer falls, known as devil’s kitchen.

deep and narrow

most of the write-ups on the robert h. treman state park refer to enfield glen as the deep and narrow gorge to be found there…

we spent most of the afternoon at taughannock falls state park and still had a couple of hours of daylight left when we decided to visit lucifer falls, the 115 waterfall showpiece of this state park. we had no expectations as we did not know what to expect… a feast for the eyes is appropriate.

having parked in the upper parking lot, we made our way along the trails that led to the aforementioned gorge. just as you enter the gorge, you are greeted by this magnificent sight of enfield creek and the tall rock walls that lead to lucifer falls a few minutes downstream.

prelude to the upper falls

from the overlook view point area at taughannock falls state park, the trails carry on to give different views yet of taughannock falls. the views, depending on the season, will be obstructed by varying degrees.

further on still along the trails you can reach the black diamond trail that will give views of the upper falls. unfortunately, the guard rails are extremely high and composing a shot of the upper falls is difficult.

this shot is just to the right of the upper falls with a partial view of the jacksonville road bridge over the taughannock creek.

from the point

the grotto and indian head cove visited and photographed in the bruce peninsula national park, we got back on the bruce trail to halfway rock point before heading back on the georgian bay trail to take us back to the parking lot.

photographed is the view looking due east from halfway rock point towards cabot head provincial nature reserve.

the grotto

we continued on the bruce trail within the bruce peninsula national park, passing boulder beach and thought we might have time to make it to overhanging point. unfortunately, it was not meant to be…

we did, however, get back to indian head cove and the grotto – here it is in all its glory!

from the trail

we were blessed with sunnier and warmer weather for a time and we stayed in the area of indian head cove and the famous grotto at the bruce peninsula national park taking some family pictures etc..

we then continued along the bruce trail. the portion of trail leaving the indian head cove area towards boulder beach is rocky and as luck would have it, the weather turned on us. what was relatively warm and sunny weather moments prior, turned into sleet, snow and rain accompanied by nasty winds. this shot on the lower rocks was taken just prior to the weather turning.

we would return to photograph the grotto later in the day.

downriver (colour and b&w)

the lower falls trail of letchworth state park essentially begins at the ‘127 steps’ that lead you lower into the genessee river gorge. once at the bottom of the stairway, the trail splits. to the right will take you right to the falls (as per the previous image post: the lower falls) while to the left will take you towards a bridge and the river itself. this is a downriver view at some point along the ‘left’ trail.

Lower Falls

Lower Falls (B&W)

referred to as the ‘grand canyon of the east ‘ by locals, letchworth state park is a feast for the eyes! photographed here is one of the three main waterfalls along the genessee river gorge: the lower falls. it is approached via a lovely hike through a wooded area that leads to the ‘127 steps’ taking you lower into the gorge. with a gorgeous fall day and vibrant foliage colours, i was in my element!
