downriver (colour and b&w)

the lower falls trail of letchworth state park essentially begins at the ‘127 steps’ that lead you lower into the genessee river gorge. once at the bottom of the stairway, the trail splits. to the right will take you right to the falls (as per the previous image post: the lower falls) while to the left will take you towards a bridge and the river itself. this is a downriver view at some point along the ‘left’ trail.

Lower Falls

Lower Falls (B&W)

referred to as the ‘grand canyon of the east ‘ by locals, letchworth state park is a feast for the eyes! photographed here is one of the three main waterfalls along the genessee river gorge: the lower falls. it is approached via a lovely hike through a wooded area that leads to the ‘127 steps’ taking you lower into the gorge. with a gorgeous fall day and vibrant foliage colours, i was in my element!

Folly Bridge

Folly Bridge (B&W)

continuing back towards the main entrance at watkins glen state park, beyond the glen of pools, you come to folly bridge: the stone arch bridge directly above the 60′ central cascade waterfall.

these are the last photographs from my fall excursion to watkins glen state park in the finger lakes region of new york state. i look forward to heading back there next spring or summer!

Glen Of Pools

Glen Of Pools (B&W)

beyond pluto falls along the gorge trail from the main entrance, the views become less dramatic and certainly not as ‘picturesque’, for lack of a better term. once i neared the end, it was time for my return towards the main entrance. the reality is that watkins glen state park is a very popular attraction and it welcomes many visitors. on this day, some spots were hard to photograph for all the people milling about the trail in both directions. the glen of pools (now free of visitors), photographed here, is an area between the central cascade and rainbow falls and bridge surrounded by massive rock walls. plunge pools and potholes are prevalent in this section of the trail.

pluto falls (colour and b&w)

continuing along the gorge trail in watkins glen state park, this is pluto falls and an adjacent staircase. according to state park literature it was so named after the roman lord of the underworld as little can grow in the darkness of constant shadows in this section of the trail known as the spiral gorge.

Pluto's Approach

Pluto's Approach (B&W)

once beyond the rainbow bridge at watkins glen state park, one enters the darker and narrower spiral gorge section of the gorge grail. one of its highlights is pluto falls – virtually always encased in shadows with little direct sunlight – hence presumably named after the roman god of the underworld. photographed here is the section leading to pluto falls, highlighting a couple of the many pools on the glen creek.

The Main Attraction

The Main Attraction (B&W)

continuing further along the gorge trail in watkins glen state park, one will eventually make it to this scene: rainbow falls (upper left of the frame), rainbow bridge and triple cascade. it is probably one of the most photographed areas of the attraction and this is my take on it.

cavern ghost

Cavern Ghost

continuing further along the gorge trail in watkins glen state park eventually brought me to one of the more prominent features within: cavern cascade. it was indeed a busy afternoon and this spot tends to have people stopping for photo ops etc… instead of fighting it, i opted to go with the flow (no pun intended) and go for as long an exposure as i could to avoid the traffic, as it were. it created a wonderful ghost-like apparition in the left of the frame…

Cascade's Approach

Cascade's Approach (B&W)

the cavern cascade is one of the more prominent features along glen creek and the gorge trail in watkins glen state park. here we are a little further along the trail, from the main entrance, approaching it. though not yet entirely visible, you can make the cascade out just to the right of the steps at the rear of the frame.
