imminence

a few minutes after the previous shot (the advance) and the storm clouds are now seemingly clawing at the aqueduct in caesarea, israel.

shortly after this series of shots, we made our way to the car just in time. it was a heavy downpour, alright…

the advance

on this morning the light was constantly changing as clouds were periodically moving in front of the sun and then away again. we were on the site for a couple of hours and eventually, it became apparent that a storm was coming off of the mediterranean sea. here you have then, the aqueduct at the beach in caesarea photographed with a storm advancing towards shore.

morning light

located roughly midway between tel aviv and haifa, caesarea maritima (the original city) was built by king herod between 25 – 13 bce. the roman aqueduct was built to supply water to the city when the wells they were using as sources of water were not sufficient.

we awoke this morning to some clouds – finally! the whole day would be unsettled, but i had hope that the shots might have more drama in them… thankfully they would.

we started out by reaching the roman aqueduct by today’s modern town of caesarea in the morning. as we arrived the sun was breaking out from the morning’s cloudy weather.

remains of the harbour

so, after rejoining my aunt, cousin and wife for dinner, the light just would not give up! i excused myself once again to get a shot of the ancient harbour wall, sometimes referred to as the pisan harbour.

byzantine church wall

apparently, the last people to inhabit masada was a group of early christians during the 5th to 7th centuries well after the jewish revolt of 73 ad.

amongst the many ruins found on masada is a byzantine church that apparently dates back to the 5th century. here is a photograph of a church wall with an arched window under beautiful morning light.

the remains

The Remains

en route to macqueripe bay along tucker valley road in chaguaramas national park is the former village of mount pleasant (now a national heritage site). still standing are a few shacks and the remains of st. chad’s anglican church along with a graveyard adjacent to the church.

the church was originally built in 1850 out of timbers, but after 18 years it had fallen into disrepair. it was rebuilt in 1875 – but again by 1915 had succumbed to decay. by the end of 1915 it was rebuilt yet again and in use until the area was given to the americans as a military base in 1941. the graveyard contains the prominent grave of one amelia trip and dates back to 1877.
