freedom arches
two of the three freedom arches over the reflecting pool at nathan phillips square in Toronto with the fountains and 3d toronto sign all lit up. originally just an architectural feature in the square, they were officially dedicated as ‘freedom arches’ in 1989, to commemorate those who fought to obtain or defend freedom.

new city hall sunset
contained within the larger nathan phillips square, one of the most distinctive landmarks in toronto is ‘new city hall’ (or ‘toronto city hall’). the name is a bit of a misnomer as it dates back over 50 years to the mid 60’s when it was completed and inaugurated as the city’s latest municipal building – the 4th one in the city’s history.
here it is, photographed around sunset time on a beautiful summer evening with the reflecting pool, fountains, freedom arches and 3d toronto sign all lit up in the foreground.

stone to crystal
no longer living in toronto, i did have the opportunity to stay at the posh park hyatt across the street from the royal ontario museum (rom) this past summer. a notoriously early riser, i let my body alarm clock wake me as usual; by the time i awoke at around 5:15am, daybreak had already begun. i hurried out to the streets and set up to shoot the latest incarnation of the rom buildings. on the left is the original facade from the early 1900’s while the right depicts the new, ultra-modern entrance to the museum known as ‘the crystal’.
the moon was indeed out and a pick-up truck stopped for a traffic light along bloor street. the cloudless sky was that early morning blue and it reflected off of the crystal’s glass panels.

a whisper of blue light 1 & 2
A wide angle view (#1) and a closer view (#2) as dusk was settling in and that period of blue light made its appearance over the Toronto skyline.

suspended whirlwind
back home in toronto after an extended period away in the caribbean, my first photographic outing was a shoot at polson pier with its great view of ‘the big smoke’. though the clouds do seem rather ominous, they really were not. aside form a couple of sprinkles, the rain/storm never really materialized. i stayed well into evening and enjoyed the blue hour after this series of shots was taken.

two chairs
exploring the area around the distillery district in toronto brought me to one of the heritage buildings on cherry street. on the loading dock, at the side of the building was a bunch of ‘stuff’ strewn about… amongst it all were these two rickety chairs just sitting there – i thought they would make for an interesting photo… so a little rearranging and voila!
incidentally, i had just returned to toronto after living in vancouver for about 13 years or so. it was precisely during this visit to ‘the distillery’ that cemented my thoughts of selling my work and turning ‘pro’. there were vendors setup in the district’s pedestrian streets; i inquired at the offices and was told to apply for the following summer… the rest is indeed history!
