lakeside duo

vc4773

a long-awaited trip to watkins glen in the finger lakes region of new york state finally materialized this past fall. i had driven through the region in the past and remember the charm of the towns that we passed through. this short trip however, was for visiting the watkins glen state park and for photographing it.

prior to reaching the park, i scoped out the area a little to find out what else was around. i stopped at the southern end of seneca lake at warren w. clute memorial park (aka lakeside park) and found these two trees at the waterfront.

weather beaten charm

Weather Beaten Charm

Weather Beaten Charm (B&W)

there are some country roads just south of short hills provincial park in and around fonthill, ontario where the landscape oozes charm. in my travels, i have come across this weather beaten cabin – i fell in love with its setting and waited for the fall colours to arrive before photographing it. here it is at the early onset of those autumn colours.

Upper Falls Autumn

i failed to post this image when i posted the other ball’s falls photographs in the ‘waterscapes’ gallery earlier this year. so… here we have an autumn view of the upper falls at ball’s falls conservation area in the niagara peninsula of southern ontario.

ride over the whirlpool

Ride Over The Whirlpoolthe whirlpool aero car is an attraction on the canadian side of the niagara river. the cable car rides for about 1 kilometer above the niagara gorge at the naturally-occurring whirlpool (because of the change in the river’s direction). here is the suspended antique cable car photographed in the area’s autumn splendour!

autumn at morningstar

Autumn At Morningstar

morningstar mill in all it’s fall colour splendour! the right-hand building is the grist mill that still produces flour during the summer and early fall months. the red structure on the left represents the sawmill that was once operating on the site. both reflected  on a small pond that is fed by lake gibson, a man-made reservoir that provides water to the city of st. catharines. the water eventually tumbles at decew falls, just beyond the buildings.

mystery vessel revisited

Mystery Vessel Revisted

now living in the area, this mystery vessel visible from the qew (queen elizabeth way) stationed in jordan harbour near st. catharines, ontario, is readily accessible.

there does not seem to be a definitive story about this vessel. apparently it is (was) a replica of la grande hermine; the carrack that brought jacques cartier to this continent in 1535.

lighthouse morning

Lighthouse Morninghaving returned to canada and chosen st. catharines as our new hometown, it was time to start exploring a little… here is the marina pier at sunrise, in port dalhousie, a community within the city of st. catharines. the lighthouse in the distance (extreme left of the frame) is located at the end of the harbour walkway trail and is known as the outer range lighthouse while the closer one is referred to as the inner lighthouse.
